An Ayurveda Perspective on Grain (and general food) Intolerances
If you are intolerant to grains, Ayurveda has ways to help you build that tolerance. Adulteration of the natural state of our grains, and the excessive use of chemicals in their production, alongside the weakening of our own digestive systems are factors at play.
We do not advocate eliminating major food groups from your daily diet in Ayurveda, as is advocated in many popular dietary systems these days. Each food group plays a major part in our health and well-being. Of course, we need to eliminate food groups whilst there is intolerance to foodstuffs, but Ayurveda looks to the source of the intolerance and treats you for this so that you can begin to eat a balanced and complete natural diet again.
It is held in Ayurveda that in omitting major food groups from our diet, we miss out on the strengthening and nourishing sources nature is providing us with. I see this in my practice and in my social circle and I feel so much compassion in these cases. There is a natural fear where there is intolerance and where symptoms are arising from ingesting certain foods, and caution is of course needed. However, there is no need to stay in this position with the right support.
In moving onto increasingly restrictive diets, I witness people becoming increasingly weak and sick as they begin to need to eliminate yet more food types from their daily diet due to the body becoming increasingly weak through the reduced diet, and so intolerant of even more foods. This is not expressed with judgement. My heart absolutely goes out to these people and all they go through. I get it. I’ve been there. We are in such discomfort and weak and ill, and everything becomes even worse with certain foods which is the last thing we want, and we have already tried everything to stop the intolerance without success…so why trust Ayurveda. How can that make any difference?
However, please hear me…if you have food intolerances, it is possible that Ayurveda can help you.
You will be assisted to balance and strengthen your individual digestive and eliminative processes, to restore dosha balance, expel toxicity from deep in the tissues as well as in the gut, and to boost immunity and resilience. Then the body can begin to tolerate more food types and enjoy a complete and natural diet again. I have witnessed it first hand, even with people with severe coeliac disease.
Once strength is restored and intolerances reduced, or to prevent them from arising in the first place, in Ayurveda we avoid eliminating major food types as far as is possible, and instead adapt our diet for each season, favouring some food groups and reducing others as we pass through each year. This helps keeps digestion and immunity strong, the body and mind more vital.
