I promised a little piece of chyawan prash. It’s a yummy tasting and highly nutritive and strengthening Ayurveda jam. In the picture, I am making chyawan prash in India with my fellow students whilst we were on internship in an Ayurveda clinic.
We made all our Ayurveda oils, pastes and powders. It gave me an appreciation for the lengthy process involved in many of the wonderful formulas that we use for the inner and outer body in Ayurveda. Making Chyawan Prash was a particularly long and yet beautiful process. It contains various herbs, fruits, spices, ghee, sugar cane and honey.
The recipe is found in the ancient Ayurveda text, Charaka Samhita, and in other respected Ayurveda texts.
Here are some of the benefits of this wonderful super food!
It can nourish and strengthen the entire body, building immunity and vitality.
It is considered to be a rasayana, meaning it will rejuvenate and nourish the tissues of the entire body.
It supports the reproductive, digestive, and respiratory systems.
And is known to be a tonic for the heart.
Take a teaspoon of chyawan prash as a warming beverage in hot milk or water. In Ayurveda the substance with which we take our herbs, including chyawan prash makes a difference. Taking this jam in hot milk will help to carry it’s strengthening and nourishing qualities more deeply and effectively into the tissues. A non dairy such as almond milk will also be good.
OR, as it is a jam, spread Chyawan Prash on your bread or toast as you would any other jam.
There are also better times of the day and year to take Ayurveda remedies, and it is recommended to take Chyawan Prash in the mornings, and in the Autumn or Winter months. It is ideal in the flu and colds season as it is warming in nature.
However, it’s heating quality make it best to avoid this in the Summer months, especially in very hot weather.
Just as there are prescriptions according to your Ayurveda type, there are varying prescriptions according to time of day and the season in Ayurveda.
