A seasonal warming drink , perfect for Halloween, or any Autumn day!
It’s nourishing and perfect to help keep Vata dosha happy at this time of year, especially in that late afternoon time of day when we can start to crave all the bad stuff.
It was even a hit with an old friend who usually protests against anything squash and pumpkin.
I’ve been using crown prince squash instead of pumpkin and I find their natural sweetness means I don’t have to add any sweeteners.
You could make it with any squash instead of pumpkin, and it’s also yummy made with sweet potato.
Follow these simple guidelines for a seasonal drink guaranteed to be a hit with the whole family.
It’s a perfect Hallowe’en treat!
INGREDIENTS;
Pumpkin, squash or sweet potatoes, baked whole until soft. Peeled. Pureed.
Dairy milk or non dairy alternative of your choice. I use oat milk.
Ground cinnamon
Ground cloves
Ground cardamom
Fresh ground black pepper
Dried or fresh ginger
INSTRUCTIONS:Peel the baked squash or pumpkin, remove the seeds and stringy parts of the flesh.
Place the flesh in a blender to make a puree.
Put one cup of milk per serving in a pan.
Add two dessert spoons of puréed squash or pumpkin per serving to the milk.
You can keep the remainder of the purée in the fridge to use again in this drink.
Also add the following spices per serving: a good pinch of cinnamon, a smaller pinch of ground cardamom, a small pinch of cloves (single finger pinch) and a little fresh ground black pepper.
Kapha types can add a good pinch of ground ginger.
Vata or pitta types can add a tsp of finely grated fresh ginger per serving, or squeeze the juice from the fresh ginger into the milk.
Blend all the ingredients together with a whisk.
Warm the milk and serve when hot.
Serve with a healthy treat such as this date treat: simply remove the stone from a medjool date and stuff with a whole pecan nut.
I hope you’ll give the recipe a try!
Let me know how you find it.
Plus! I’m sure you’ll get creative and put your own mark on it. I’d love to hear about it if so!
