The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a collection of sutras (aphorisms) on the theory and practice of Yoga.
The Sutras have been called the first book of human psychology and will deepen and advance your Yoga practice and understanding. They teach us about the nature of the mind, the causes of suffering, and offer step-by-step solutions to our suffering and means to it’s transcendence.
With the Yoga Sutras, even the physical posture practice of Yoga becomes less limited, less purely physical in scope as it is recognised as a means to positively shift your state of being.
Each Sutra or aphorism, is like a seed that has the potential to awaken within us new understanding about the nature of the mind and who we are.
These Sutras are the primary text of Raja Yoga, the Royal path of Yoga, the Yoga of the mind.
There comes a time in our life as Yoga practitioners when we will want to advance our understanding of the full reach of Yoga practice. The Yoga Sutras provide us with a wonderful and time-tested handbook for success on the path of Yoga, and for evolution of being.
Patanjali was an author, mystic, grammarian, and philosopher believed to have written around 200BCE – 200CE. He is believed to be the author of a number of Sanskrit works including The Yoga Sutras.
The Yoga Sutras is a major text of study on many Yoga Teacher Training Courses.
There are many commentariers on the Yoga Sutras but gathering in a class to learn them can really bring them to life and transform your understanding of yourself and the nature of your mind.
There are four chapters or “Padas” to the Yoga Sutras and 196 Sutras in total.
In this course, we will be studying the Sadhana Pada, which is the chapter on practice, and contains perhaps the sutras which are most accessible to us as Yoga practitioners.
Week by week we will reflect on the deep teachings hidden in two or three two sutras as we work our way through from the start to finish of Sadhana Pada (the chapter on practice).
There will be guided practices to enjoy during and in-between classes, relating to the teachings encapsulated in each week’s Sutras.
The classes promise to be inspirng and thought–provoking and transformational, deeply impacting your Yoga practice.
And there will be time to ask your questions about all things Yoga and meditation.
The classes will take place online on Wednesday afternoonsat 4pm and will last from 45 minutes – 60 minutes including a guided meditation.
To reserve your place, please pay an initial deposit of £57. There will then be three monthly payments of £57 due once the course begins.
Patanjali has become “the alpha and the omega of the whole tradition of Yoga.” Osho
