Ayurveda recommends cleansing in the Spring due to the natural rhythms and seasonal changes that align with the body’s internal processes. Each season is thought to have specific qualities that influence our health, and Spring, in particular, is seen as an ideal time for detoxification and renewal.
In Ayurvedic philosophy, the body accumulates “ama” (toxins or waste) from the previous season, particularly in the Winter. The cold, damp, and heavy nature of Winter can slow down digestion and lead to the build-up of ama in the body. When Spring arrives, the warmer, lighter, and more dynamic qualities of the season encourage the body to naturally release these toxins.
In Spring, however, the increased moisture in the environment can exacerbate further the qualities such as congestion, water-retention, sluggishness, and heaviness that are the remnants of the Winter season lifestyle and diet. Cleansing in the Spring helps to release accumulated congestion and toxicity, and prevent further accumulation, stimulating metabolism, clearing stagnation, and revitalizing energy reserves.
Spring is a time of new growth and rejuvenation in nature.
