MY DAILY RITUALS FOR KAPHA DOSHA

The cornerstone of health in Ayurveda is aligning our daily habits and diet to our  constitutional type and the nature of each changing season. Without these fundamentals in place, Ayurveda treatments and medicines cannot work as effectively for you.

If your constitution is Kapha dosha, implementing these simple Kapha pacifying tips in your day-to-day lifestyle will support greater equilibrium in body and mind and a return to optimum health. If you are a dual type with Kapha dosha, follow these guidelines in the Late Winter and Spring Seasons

“ Thank you so much Sara.  You’re blowing me away with all your knowledge and input. And I’m starting to feel the benefits already”

“A daily ritual is a way of saying, I’m voting for myself, I’m taking care of myself.”

Morning Rituals:

Aim to rise around 6am.

On rising, eliminate bowels, clean tongue with tongue scraper, drink 350mls hot boiled water.

Once or twice per week, oil the body, from feet to face, with 20mls warm organic cold pressed oil. You can use safflower oil, sesame oil or mustard seed oil. Apply long strokes around the long bones, and circular movements over joints. Leave the oil on body for 15 -20 minutes, keeping body warm.

On other days, instead of oiling the body, before showering use a natural bristle brush or raw silk glove (garshana) and dry massage the skin working from the feet upwards towards the heart. In Spring, which is a Kapha season, it might be a good idea to omit the body oiling and do daily skin brushing to help relieve stagnation and congestion.

Whilst the oil is being absorbed, and/or before showering,  practice 1-3 rounds of kapalabahti and 4-6 rounds of sun salutations. Then after a few minutes rest in savasana, meditate on the radiant sun, shining brightly in  your heart, it’s rays extending out to fill your whole body, energising every cell.

After the Yoga and meditation practices, enjoy a hot shower. Vigorously rub the body dry with a towel to further stimulate the circulation.

Food Rituals:

For Kapha types, breakfast is not essential. This is often a relief as often Kapha types don’t have much of an appetite in the early morning. It is OK to skip breakfast or to eat a piece of warm stewed seasonal fruit: you can cook the fruit in a pan with a little water and add cinnamon, cloves, ginger to warm and stimulate the metabolism.

Please make lunch the main meal of the day, and eat between 12 noon – 2pm Eat in a quiet, relaxed manner. Avoid eating and working at the same time. Opt for local and seasonal foods as far as possible. If local produce is restricted, opt for foods from you climatic region. Avoid/reduce cold or frozen foods, iced or carbonated drinks, and heavy, oily foods. Also avoid/reduce raw foods and salads, and congesting foods such as glutionus foods, processed and baked white flour goods and dairy products, white sugar, and caffeine. .

Eat salads in the summer preferably at lunch time only, and eat them at the end of your meal. They should make up a maximum of 20% of your food intake.

If you eat animal products, please favour lighter meats and fish, and make these only 20% of  your dietary intake. That means you have these products maybe only 2-3 times/week, or you take smaller amounts with each meal. Animal products, including eggs and cheeses are very dense and so tax the digestion which we want to avoid.

Include lots of bitter and pungent foods in your diet such as dark leafy greens, kale, onions, leeks, and add pungent spices such as ginger, mustard seeds, chillis and cayenne in your foods. whole grains such as barley, buckwheat, corn, rice, oats, wheat, quinoa, amaranth, wheat.

Include legumes in your diet, and lentils. It is good for Kapha types to favour a 1:2 ratio of legumes to grains.

Add small amounts of fermented foods to meals, especially in the Early Winter months.

Spice foods with ginger (dried and fresh), cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, fenugreek, black pepper, mustard seeds, garlic.

Avoid snacking in between meals. .

During the afternoon tea break, give yourself to complete rest for just 5 or 10 minutes, take a few deep inhales through the nose and feel your whole rib cage fill with energising, refreshing breath. With more gentle inhales, savour the warming and stimulating fragrances of your tea. Favour herb teas over caffeinated drinks: fresh ginger tea with a little honey would be a lovely Kapha pacifying afternoon tea: you can also add a little turmeric, some cloves and/or cardamom to your tea.

Take a light supper in the early evening, before sunset if possible. A warming soup, fragranced with some digestion-enhancing spices followed by a herbal tea and a few pieces of dried fruit for example, is a perfect evening meal for Kapha dosha.

Chew foods well, and try to avoid eating in noisy, stressful environments. After eating, take a brisk stroll. This aids digestion.

Before meals, a “deepana” or aperitif  can help digestion: an infusion of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds taken 15 minutes before eating.lutenous

Exercise Rituals

Try to enjoy a brisk walk in nature each day. Exercise is important to help reduce the Kapha dosha tendency to feel lethargic and heavy. Try to exercise daily to the point of sweating.. If you are a Kapha dosha type you have the greatest endurance amongst all three doshas, and you also have a tendency towards congestion including in the lymphatics. Therefore for your health and well-being try to include some cardio exercise daily: jogging, long-distance walking, use of an exercise bike and/or treadmill, team sports or group fitness classes such as Zumba and a more dynamic form of Yoga are all really good or Kapha dosha.  The best times to exercise are in the morning between 8am and 10am, or in the evening between 6pm and 8pm.

Work Rituals

People sometimes make the mistake of thinking that Kapha types are not motivated to succeed. This is a mistake. Kapha types might not have the driven ambition of many Pitta types, nor the quick vision and enthusiasm of Vata dosha. However, they are motivated towards material security and this can lead them to success in their career. They will not burn out nor lose focus and direction as can happen with the other two types. Make the most of your capacity to work at a steady, methodical pace. This will enable to use your innate talents to put the structures in place needed for a business to thrive, and to see projects through to completion. Be aware of your naturally  reassuring presence in the workplace which will allow you to be a valued supportive and nurturing presence amongst colleagues. Watch out for any stubbornness which might manifest as a resistance to change when it arises and/or is deemed necessary.

Evening Rituals

Avoid working in the evening, and stressful viewing, reading or conversations

Enjoy a glass of ginger tea with a little honey again, a couple of hours after supper in the evening to further aid your digestive process and support sleep.

A couple of gentle rounds of sun salutes in the late afternoon or early evening, before supper if possible, and a brisk walk after supper are great practices for Kapha dosha.

Before sleep, you could practice a 15 minute meditation on the heart centre, visualising the sun once more in the heart, this time seeing it as a deep orange, like the colour of the sun at sunset. Sense or see with your inner vision, the warm glow of this sun filling your whole body.

Aim to sleep by 10.00pm
